Melbourne Sexual Health Centre’s primary function is the management and control of sexually transmissible infections (STIs). Other sexual health conditions which can be managed by your General Practitioner, Sexual Health Nurse, Community Health Centre or Melbourne Sexual Health Centre include:
Balanitis
- Balanitis is inflammation of the glans (head) of the penis. It may also involve the foreskin.
- Balanitis is not a sexually transmissible infection. However it can occur in the presence of an STI.

- A long-lasting (probably lifelong) skin inflammation that involves the genital area.
- It is an external condition, not affecting the vagina.

Recurrent Vulvo Vaginal Candidiasis (RVVC)
- RV VC is where there are more than four diagnosed episodes of candidiasis per year
- Often symptoms are worse before periods or only occur before periods. (Cyclic vulvitis).
- The level of symptoms may vary from only being noticeable with penetrative sexual activity, to a frequent awareness of the vulva, made worse by any penetration or friction.

Thrush – Candida infection
- The normal, healthy vagina contains many different organisms which work together to keep it healthy.
- When a woman has “thrush” the balance of these organisms changes leading to symptoms such as itching, irritation and discharge.
- Most women have thrush at some time during their lives. Treatment is available.
