STI screening in Sex On Premises Venues Minimize

Melbourne Sexual Health Centre (MSHC) offers off-site services (outreach) to men who have sex with men at various Sex On Premises Venues (SOPVs).The service is free and confidential (can be anonymous) and includes:
• Testing
• Vaccination
• Education; and
• Referral.

What does testing include?
The testing is confidential and quick. Testing consists of swabs and, if you wish, blood tests as well. The nurse takes a swab (cotton bud) from your throat and you do the rest in the privacy of the bathroom - pass some urine into a jar and also take an anal swab if indicated.

Qualified staff
Experienced sexual health nurses attend venues at regular advertised times to provide this free and convenient one stop screening service.

Phone results
Most results can be given by phone, clients are asked to return for HIV results only.

Free entry
Venue owners offer free entry to their premises for STI screening. That does not mean free entry to use the facilities, however it does ensure that anyone can have an STI screen (and return for results if necessary) free of entry fee. You just need to make the reception staff aware of your needs on entry i.e. ‘to see the nurse’.

Can I tell if I have got something?
Frequently, a visit to the sauna results in sexual contact with one or more men. Often STIs are passed from one person to another without either person knowing that they had, or have passed the infection on. We call this asymptomatic transmission. Alternatively symptoms may soon appear, prompting a visit to your doctor.

Referral
Many men have appreciated the opportunity to chat to the nurses about issues that concern them - often not specifically sexual health related. Referral to sensitive and appropriate services including doctors, counsellors and peer support is a valuable part of the range of services offered at venues.

You can phone Melbourne Sexual Health Centre on (03) 9341 6200 and follow the prompts to the Results and Information Line. Nurses will be able to give you the times, locations and dates of the next most convenient SOPV outreach clinic for your STI screen or chat.
