Re-emerging Syphilis
Since 2002 new diagnoses of syphilis has been doubling every 6-9 months in Victoria. Almost all cases have been in men who have sex with men. Men who have sex with men and have HIV are over represented in syphilis cases. Syphilis increases the risk of HIV transmission and if untreated may progress to tertiary syphilis.
This web site has been created to aid in the diagnosis of early syphilis, and thus reduce transmission. There may be no symptoms of early syphilis.
We recommend at least yearly screening for syphilis in men who have sex with men.
This web site has:
- Pictures of common syphilis presentations.
- Treatment guidelines
- Fact Sheet (Client brochure)
- Contact letters
- Screening guidelines for gay men
To reduce the risk of syphilis we suggest that men who have sex with men:
- Reduce their numbers of sexual partners
- Maintain safer sexual practices
- Remember that syphilis is commonly spread via oral sex
- Seek early advice if they notice oral, genital or anal sores, or rashes on bodies, hands or feet.
- Have regular STI testing, including a syphilis blood test, at least every 12 months.
