Chancres are usually small painless, firm ulcers which may go unnoticed.
Any oral, genital or anal sores should be tested for possible syphilis.

The rashes seen in secondary syphilis are highly variable, but are typically non-itchy. They may be accompanied by fever, lethargy, swollen glands and hair loss. Anyone with a puzzling rash should be tested for syphilis.
