Prevalence of HPV in people assigned male at birth who are same sex attracted aged 16 - 19 years

About HPV

HPV (Human papillomavirus) is a virus that is commonly transmitted through sexual contact. It is so common that it could be considered a normal part of being sexually active.

Most people will have HPV at some time in their life and never know it, as there are often no noticeable symptoms of HPV. There are many different types of HPV, and some types cause visible warts on the skin and genitals. Genital warts are generally painless and appear as bumps or growths on the skin and can be treated.

The body’s immune system usually clears HPV by itself, but sometimes certain types of HPV take longer than usual and it can increase the risk of developing some cancers.

Studies have shown that HPV infection is common among men who have sex with men (MSM), who are also at increased risk for developing anal cancer compared with other men.

About the study

The HYPER3 study involves ONE clinic visit at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre. You will be asked to complete a questionnaire, and will also be tested for HPV. Receive a Gift Voucher Card for your participation!

How we want to talk to

We are interested in speaking to individuals who are:

• Assigned male at birth; 
• Aged 16-19 years; 
• Same-sex attracted; 
• Living in Australia since 2018

What's involved

The HYPER3 study will take about 45-60 minutes at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre.

If you agree to participate in this study, we will ask you to fill in a questionnaire. The questionnaire includes sensitive questions such as the number of sexual partners, types of sexual experiences, HPV vaccination status, and general health questions such as smoking.

This study also involves providing oral, anal and penile samples to be tested for HPV and other sexually transmissible infections. Routine HIV and STI (chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and syphilis) screening will be offered/performed as part of the patient’s routine care and management at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre.
