How PrEPared are you? is a research project investigating the knowledge of and attitudes amongst overseas born and newly arrived gay and bisexual men (cisgender,  trans or gender diverse), and other men who have sex with men toward Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) as an HIV prevention strategy.

About PrEP

PrEP is a highly effective medication which can prevent those at risk of HIV from becoming HIV positive. We want to know more about what overseas born men who have sex with men know and think about PrEP.

About the study

Recent research shows that overseas born men who have sex with men who are newly arrived in Australia are at a higher risk of acquiring HIV than Australian-born men who have sex with men.

How PrEPared Are You? aims to find out more about what this group know and think about PrEP.

Ethics

All research in Australia involving humans is reviewed by an independent group of people called a Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC).  The ethical aspects of this research project have been approved by the Alfred Hospital HREC.

This project will be carried out according to the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007). This statement has been developed to protect the interests of people who agree to participate in human research studies. Approval has been given by the Alfred Hospital HREC which reviews ethics applications for research carried out at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre.

Who we want to talk to

We are interested in speaking to men (cisgender, trans or gender diverse) who:

  • are over 18 years of age
  • were born overseas
  • have been living in Australia for less than 5 years
  • have been sexually active with other men (cis and trans) in the past 12 months
  • have not been diagnosed as HIV-positive

The study is open to both non-PrEP and PrEP users. The study is open to people with and without access to Medicare.

What's involved

We are keen to have a chat with you about PrEP.

The conversation will take about an hour and will take place via Zoom.

We will give you a $30 Coles-Myer or Woolworths voucher to reimburse you for your time.
