About the study
We want to address the inequality in the HIV response by evaluating whether the provision of the PrEP-STAT pack at the point of consultation at Melbourne Sexual Health Centre can improve the awareness, uptake and ongoing access/linkage to prevention among high-risk overseas-born GBM. Same-day PrEP initiation has been successfully implemented in several settings and countries, with high acceptability and feasibility reported. Beyond the same-day provision of one-month supply of Truvada, we will use a codesigned package from the focus community, including resources and motivational messaging informed by behavioural economics (Nudge theories).
Who do we want to talk to
- Self-identify as gay, bisexual men, queer or other men who have sex with men
- No access to Medicare
- At least 18 years old at the time of recruitment
- No prior HIV diagnosis or a positive HIV test result (Unknown is acceptable)
What's involved
- Participants will receive a free 30-day supply of PrEP to start on the consultation day.
- Participants will be shown the PrEP STAT pack, instructed on oral PrEP use, and given an information card detailing how to navigate the ‘Pay-It-Forward’ system*.
- During the same visit, participants will undergo HIV testing. However, they can start using PrEP before obtaining the testing results, which will be available within 24 hours.
- The ‘Pay-It-Forward’ system will allow participants to access an online platform featuring messages from previous PrEP users aimed at normalizing and encouraging PrEP uptake.
- Four weeks post-enrolment, participants will receive a follow-up survey via email and text message asking whether they initiated PrEP after receiving the pack.
- Eight weeks post-enrolment, a second follow-up survey will be sent asking whether participants continued PrEP use by purchasing it after completing the free pack.
*The ‘Pay-It-Forward’ model can encourage PrEP users to share the opportunity within their community, ensuring program sustainability. Additionally, messages from donors contributing financially to sustain the program will be displayed, encouraging voluntary donations to support the continued provision of the PrEP STAT pack.
