What about my HIV medications?

Why do I need to get a GP referral?

By providing us with a GP referral, we will routinely write to your GP updating them on the care we are providing you. This is known as a specialist referral model, which is routine practice between GPs and specialists.

Will I need to bring a referral each time?

If your GP writes you an indefinite referral, you should only need to do this once.

Will I ever need to get another indefinite referral from my GP?

If you change your GP or your GP moves to another practice, then we will need a new indefinite referral.

I haven’t been asked for a GP referral in the past, why is this changing?

We believe that the specialist referral model strengthens the relationship between you, your GP and your HIV specialist . Adapting the way we use Medicare bring us in line  with other Alfred Health outpatient  services.

What if I don’t have Medicare?

There will be no change to the service we provide to people without Medicare.

What if I don’t have a GP, or haven’t told a GP about my HIV status?

You can find a GP by searching health direct , or ASHM HIV treatment prescribers. Our staff can help you find a GP if you would like us to. Please call us in The Green Room if you would like to talk to us about finding a GP.

Can I still see my regular Doctor at MSHC?

Yes, you can still see your regular doctor.

What happens if I forget my GP referral?

We will remind you before your visit that we ask for a GP referral. If you forget we will still provide your care as usual, but ask that you remember for your next visit, as this is the new model of care in The Green Room.

What if I have any questions?
