Why we are making this change
- Demand for care at MSHC continues to rise — more than 55,000 consultations each year.
- The current walk-in model, designed over 20 years ago, is no longer sustainable.
- Increasing STI rates (syphilis, gonorrhoea, mpox) and more complex cases require specialist attention.
- Longer wait times and limited prioritisation mean people most at risk may not be seen promptly.
- The new model will ensure MSHC remains responsive, equitable and sustainable for the future.
What is changing
- From 2nd December 2025, you will need to book a time to see a clinician.
- If you come without an appointment, we might not be able to help you that day.
- Clients will call MSHC first to speak with a sexual health nurse.
- A nurse will talk with you to understand your needs and help you receive the right care:
- This may be an appointment at MSHC, or
- Another service that can help you sooner or closer to home.
What this means for you
- Call us first
- A nurse will speak with you by phone to help you get the care that’s right for you.
This change means we can:
- Help you get the sexual healthcare you need
- See urgent and complex cases more quickly
- Reduce waiting times for those who need specialist care
- Improve fairness and access to complex sexual health services across Victoria
