Why we are making this change

  • Demand for care at MSHC continues to rise — more than 55,000 consultations each year.
  • The current walk-in model, designed over 20 years ago, is no longer sustainable.
  • Increasing STI rates (syphilis, gonorrhoea, mpox) and more complex cases require specialist attention.
  • Longer wait times and limited prioritisation mean people most at risk may not be seen promptly.
  • The new model will ensure MSHC remains responsive, equitable and sustainable for the future.

What is changing

  • From 2nd December 2025, you will need to book a time to see a clinician.
    • If you come without an appointment, we might not be able to help you that day.
  • Clients will call MSHC first to speak with a sexual health nurse.
  • A nurse will talk with you to understand your needs and help you receive the right care:
    • This may be an appointment at MSHC, or
    • Another service that can help you sooner or closer to home.

What this means for you

  • Call us first
  • A nurse will speak with you by phone to help you get the care that’s right for you.

This change means we can:

  • Help you get the sexual healthcare you need
  • See urgent and complex cases more quickly
  • Reduce waiting times for those who need specialist care
  • Improve fairness and access to complex sexual health services across Victoria
